Clustering Device Programmers: Evolution beyond Conventional Gang Programmers

If you have used or are thinking of getting a device programmer for your computer hardware needs, then you have likely heard of and are considering the purchase of universal device programmers which Xeltek offers you a range of. Universal programmers have been met with tremendous success overseas and have to used to great effect because of their efficacy, superior quality and their ability to be highly customizable. Hitherto, the typical choice for volume programming of ICs has been use of Traditional Gang programmers which may come with 4, 8, or 16 programming sockets. However, this is an old technology and there are following limitations in this:

  1. With Traditional Gang programmers all programming sockets are controlled by one controller and with one data buffer, which limits flexibility.
  2. Programming of chips is done simultaneously but verifying is done sequentially. In other words, the 8 socket programmer does not provide 8 times the output. It may provide 5 to 6 times the output.
  3. Many of today’s gang programming applications require to be programmed with different data for each chip. The serial number, the configuration data and the calibration data are different for each chip. Since a traditional gang programmer has only one data buffer, all chips have to be programmed with same data. Therefore, traditional gang programmers are unable to support such applications.

This is where SuperPro gang programmers separate from traditional gang programmers. Unlike deficiencies that have been explained above, SuperPro gang programmers support all applications above and avoid any inadequacy by its technologically advanced design.

Unfortunately, with gang programmers a choice has to be made at the outset as regards the number of programming sockets. This is because a future upgrade to higher sockets is difficult owing to the fact that new equipment would have to be purchased again at high cost.

Cluster programming by use of individual programmers solve all of the problems present in the gang programmers applications. The advent of stand-alone programmer, which operates by itself without a PC attached, makes cluster programming ideal. Xeltek has been producing stand-alone programmers for the last 5 years and is now a world leader in the stand-alone programmer market.

Xeltek gives you the option different kinds of programmers of which give people the option of buying according to their requirement:

Each of these have their own unique application which needs to be considered before deciding what is suitable for every individual requirement. Before you decide to buy a programmer, it is useful to consider the qualities and particular capability of each so that you can make an informed decision about what is right for you:

  • Xeltek’s Gang programmers are equipped with 4ea high speed 48pin DIP programming sockets (SuperPro 5004GP has 144pin) and they support over 40,000 devices (SuperPro 5004GP supports more than 46,000 devices) at this time which number is growing. This is more than any gang programmer can support in the market right now. These gang programmers support more than 1000 socket adapters.
  • Asynchronous fast programming is ensured by each module being independent from one another. The programming starts automatically when a chip is inserted.
  • In order to be able to cluster programmers, the individual or single programmers should support the Stand-alone or PC free programming mode or feature.
  • It is usually recommended that SuperPro 3000U and SuperPro 501S can be clustered.
  • For production operation, SuperPro 3000U N*Cluster & SuperPro 501S N*Cluster operate in stand-alone (without a PC attached) mode. Just insert the chip and the programming operation is totally hands-free. By operating multiple programmers simultaneously you can use them in high volume production environment.
  • Since there is no requirement for a host PC for the running of the programmer, there is no requirement for hiring skilled labor for the operation which translates into savings.
  • The fact that the clustering device programmer is based on the operating hands free mode and does not require any PC screen operation, it is able to minimize operator error as well, which is a not inconsiderable advantage and which one would have to take into account.
  • You have the added benefit of being able to ensure the security of your data because you have the option of removing the CF cards at end of each day and storing them separately with this device programmer.
  • When using this device programmer, you will find that when you want to make the changeover from the engineering stage to the manufacturing phase, it is a smooth and painless transition since you use the same programmer and CF card for data storage for the engineering phase.
  • It is possible for a person to be able to easily operate 10 or more programmers concurrently; this offers the flexibility in 1-N sockets instead of fixed 8 sockets.
  • Xeltek has conducted tests which have shown that 5 or 6 sets of SUPERPRO 501S operating concurrently are able to produce the same throughput as an 8gang programmer programming the chipset (27C322) at 240 seconds.

These are just some of the factors that you should consider when you are undertaking the purchase for gang device programmers.

SuperPro 5000 and SuperPro 5004GP currently support 32 Gb NAND FLASH memories

May 19th, 2009 sohail 1 comment

Xeltek Inc. is proud to inform their valuable customers with their large size NAND Flash programming support which is growing daily. Since December, 2007; little after Xeltek launched their new programming solution family: SuperPro 5000 and SuperPro 5004GP, Xeltek has started supporting 32 Gb NAND Flash devices with Samsung K9HBG08U1M. As of today, supported NAND Flash devices count by SuperPro 5000/5004GP is way higher than the other programmers in the market.

Programming and verifying speed of SuperPro 5K families for NAND devices are 64 MB per minute which equals to 8Mb per second. It is surprising that, the price for SuperPro 5000/5004GP programmers is approximately %40 cheaper than the other manufacturers’ cheapest programmers that can program 32 Gb NAND; even though the programming speeds are identical. On the contrary, all SuperPro 5K products have been presented in the market since the beginning of this year and supporting 32 Gb NAND Flash, not like we are announcing that we are on development phase.

By having the market based on China; world’s factory, and with the contribution of Xeltek China and Xeltek Korea, Xeltek Inc. is enjoying the advantages of technological advanced facilities. It is also known as Xeltek has always had rapid responses for customer’s algorithm requests and has already had much experience on dealing bad block issues.

Currently, Xeltek Inc. supports more than 400 NAND Flash devices such as Micron MT29F32G08QAAWP, Intel JS29F32G08FANC1 and etc…Beside that, Xeltek is also supporting various NAND devices from various major companies listed as Samsung, Hynix, Toshiba, Micron, Intel, ST, Spansin. And there is no doubt the more will be coming in near future. “As the technology and market allows, we will keep supporting large size NAND devices. We are the biggest follower of this NAND technology.” said Sam Kim, CEO/President Xeltek Inc. “Let’s face the fact that Xeltek is shining from Far East.”

Xeltek Partition Merge Software

May 19th, 2009 sohail 2 comments

Do you know that Xeltek has “Partition Merge Software”? Xeltek has a smart tool to combine files for the customer’s special NAND programming requirement. Xeltek design engineers helped Qualcomm to implement the related projects with partition programming.

Xeltek SuperPro Programmers support a lot of NAND Flash devices from different chip manufacturers. There are 3 different types of bad block handling methods for NAND Flash programming. Beside the standard method “skip bad block”, Xeltek software also provides “Hard Copy” and “Partition” programming Options. “Hardcopy” is used to read the chip that was programmed on a third party programmer with different methods.

Partition Programming is a more complex bad block handling method. Xeltek currently uses Qualcomm multiple partition method and is mainly applied to Qualcomm’s wireless card and mobile phone platforms as well as some Linux systems. If the user wants to program multiple segments of data starting at the assigned locations, Xeltek has “Partition Merge Software” to help generating a programmable file.

May 19th, 2009 sohail No comments

Xeltek is very proud to announce another milestone for programming industry. Hereby, we introduce you the new age universal device programmers: SuperPro 500P and SuperPro 501S. Both programmers are low priced, supports ultra-fast programming, programs & verifies 64 Mb NOR FLASH memory in 11.3 seconds and 64 Mb EEPROM in 43 seconds, provides high voltage safety for hardware, PC hosted and Stand-alone mode (only SuperPro 501S) operations supported, comes with 20,000+ device support including all major brands and renown devices, has built-in with 48 universal pin-drivers, and compatible with Windows XP x32/x64 and Windows Vista.

Xeltek SuperPro 500P Programmer is designed identical with SuperPro 5000 programmer structure. It has 32 bit ARM9 MCU which gives the capability of 3 to 5 times faster programming speed compare to SuperPro 3000U. To support today’s most complex devices, the programmer built in 48 universal pin drivers, and it is not expandable unlike SuperPro 3000U or SuperPro 5000. SuperPro 500P is supporting only PC hosted mode and the price is $845.00

Unlike SuperPro 500P Programmer, SuperPro 501S Programmer can be controlled in either PC hosted mode or Stand-alone mode operations. Under PC hosted mode, the programmer can be controlled via a high-speed USB2.0 connection, while in stand-alone mode; the user controls the programmer via 20-characters, 4-line LCD display with 6-KEY keypad. Besides that, in stand-alone mode, the user can operate multiple units to cluster them as a gang programmer. By operating multiple programmers simultaneously, SuperPro 501s programmer can be use in a high volume production environment. This is a great approach that Xeltek provides to its customers. Start with 2 units to cluster and by the time your manufacturing line gets larger, add unlimited programmers on to your bundle as if it is a gang programmer. This gives the flexibility and cost efficiency with its scalability. Considering the $995.00 listing price, SuperPro 501S is nothing but a steal.

Both programmers, SuperPro 500P and SuperPro 501s; will sweep the market with its highly advance capabilities and very low market prices.

How to use Device Search Tool

May 19th, 2009 sohail No comments

The Xeltek Device Search menu is an on-line tool that allows users to rapidly identify which Xeltek Superpro® universal programmer and universal programming adapters are required to support their desired devices. The search results are delivered in seconds and the user never has to leave the website to complete the programmer ordering process.

How to use Device Search Tool

From the search result page, you can either choose the name of your device or the package type that you are looking for and click on the link. The page will display the list of Xeltek programmers that support your selected device. Select a programmer from the list and click on the link to open the programmer description page, or you can select and click on the adapter link to see the image of the adapter (image is not available for some adapters).

Which search methods do we have?

Widest
This method returns the most of the results. But is, in the same time, the slowest. Entering for example 27512, this is equivalent to search after *27*512*. This because, generally, the technology mark (C, LC, F, HCT) falls after the second character.

Wide
This method is much precise than the previous one. Entering for example 27512, this is equivalent to search after *27512*.

Exact This method allows you to search after a specific search string. Entering for example 27512, this method will return only those devices whos part number is 27512 only.

Where specified (allowed), wildcard characters can be entered.

What are wildcards?

Wildcard characters allow you to search on different variations of a device part number. You can locate a greater number of supported devices by using well-placed wildcard characters. Two wildcard characters are accepted: [ * ] and [ ? ].
[ * ]
matches an unlimited number of characters in the space it occupies.
[ ? ] matches any character occupying that single space.

For example:

Search for: Finds:
*27512 AM27512, CAT27512, M27512, etc.
*27512* AM27512DC, UPD27512AD, MSM27512ZB-RS, etc.
AM27512?C AM27512DC, AM27512PC, etc.
*27512?C? AM27512DC, AM27512PC, UPD27512ACT, etc.

SuperPro Gang Programmers vs. Traditional Gang Programmers

May 19th, 2009 sohail No comments

  • Comes in 4, 8, or 16 sockets
  • One controller controls all sockets, which is an old technology. For example, 8-gang programmer produces throughput of 5-6 sockets only.
  • There is only one data buffer, thus all devices can only be programmed with same data. But, there are many chips, which require different data to be written into each chip. Serial number, configuration, or calibration information are some of the examples.
  • Each socket contains own control function and data buffer eliminating the problems of a traditional gang programmer.
  • Programming speed is faster.

  • Utilizes multiple individual programmers for concurrent programming.
  • Xeltek SuperPro series stand-alone programmers are ideal for such an application. Each unit operates independently without a PC attached.
  • Any number of units can be clustered together for volume programming. Additional units can be added as the volume grows.
  • Superpro501S or Superpro3000U are ideal for cluster programming.
  • Since the project files are stored in a removable Compact Flash card, data security can be insured by removing and storing in a safe place at end of each day.

Device Count, a Marketing Ploy???

May 18th, 2009 sohail No comments

Device count issue has come up more than once; and I am compelled to make a statement.

Nowadays; many devices support multiple package types. So, most programmer manufacturers count different package types as one device. There is an industry consensus on this. All the large manufacturers list devices with the supported package types and count total numbers as supported devices.

However, some programmer manufacturers have raised an issue about the device count. So, let’s give an example. An IC device comes with DIP and BGA type packages. Programmer manufacturer A supports both package types and B supports only a DIP type. If a customer needs a support for BGA type he will have to go to company A and not company B. The company B lost a sale because they didn’t support the BGA type. So, is it important to put in engineering and manufacturing resources to develop and manufacture different package types? It definitely is. It often makes a difference between making a sale or not.

So, why some companies are complaining about high device count of other companies? Because they don’t have enough financial and manpower resources to develop and manufacture many different adapters, but don’t want to admit it. Manufacturing and stocking many socket adapters cause significant strain on financial and engineering resources and only some larger programmer companies can undertake them.

- So, is showing high device count a marketing ploy?
No, it shows strength of the company.

- Then, is it a sour grape by lesser companies who cannot undertake such a task?
It sure is.

President
